Paper. Etat : VG-. B/W Photographs (illustrateur). First Edition. The Rideau Canal was first proposed in 1816 to connect Ottawa (Bytown) to Kingston, Ontario. The Americans had given the Canadians a scare during the War of 1812. The canal provided an alternate shipping supply route. What began as a military idea later evolved into an industrial phase and later into a recreational phase. Colonel John By supervised the 126 mile project. These 154 ( bilingual French and English) pages commemorate the Canal's 150'th anniversary. Many views of the Canal are given in b/w images as are materials requisition forms, lockmasters journals, and correspondence between principals (see Wright and Bolton - page 58). Each illustration or `graphic' has explanatory notes. Cond : PAPER wrapper is bluey-green with white lettering. Front cover graphic is an 1839 painting by Ainslie.
