Synopsis

Excerpt from Watts

Although indeed Watts'' life must be taken as a unity, yet one cannot refrain from the thought that there were in him three lives linked in one three lives corresponding to the three portraits he has left of himself; the youth of seventeen years, with ?owing locks and Shelley-like attire (painted in 1834) the bearded man of forty-seven, in dark coat and sombrero hat; and the familiar octogenarian of the snow-white hair and purple skull cap. Even Watts'' work lends itself to three such epochs, representing first the man who seeks his place; secondly, him who finds and becomes established in it; and finally, him who, from the vantage ground of attainment, strikes out with vigorous independence and freedom.
