Mount Jefferson State Park was established in 1956 when 452 acres of land were purchased and donated to the state to meet the minimum requirements for a state park. Additional acreage was subsequently acquired, bringing the current total to 489 acres. The park includes the peak and steep slopes of Mount Jefferson. The steep-sided, northwesterly trending mountain rises abruptly more than feet above the surrounding area to an elevation of feet above sea level. It lies along the drainage divide of the North Fork and South Fork of the New River. The weather ing actions of these drainage systems and other erosive forces influenced the size and shape of Mount Jefferson and other mountains in the area, carving them out of what was once a broad plateau covering most of western North Carolina in past geologic eras. Mount Jefferson State Park is a botanical paradise, with a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers. The elevations above feet are dominated by red oaks and are characteristic of a more northern environment. Below feet, a mixed mesophytic forest more characteristic of a southern environment is dominant.
