Deeply unsettling but that's what Murugan is best at. Every character in it's simplicity comes out only as more humane with their dreams and failures as everyone else. A must read for Perumal Murugan fans. I have been eagerly waiting for this author's next book after reading 'One Part Woman'. I can only say it was worth waiting for. For the uninitiated ones I would recommend this book first before they plan to read 'One part woman'. The plot, characters and language (translation) in 'Pyre' is much easier to understand and will prepare one well for the unusual plot and style of writing in 'One Part Woman'. It is not an easy task to translate Perumal Murugan's writing but translator deserves a big round of applause for doing justice to the story. Thank you once again to Aniruddhan Vasudevan for bringing out this master piece which would have stayed hidden if not for his efforts. --By sam on 13 March 2017

Murugan uses the rural/semi urban setting and his simple language to devastating effect yet again. It is a love story which like many others will yearn for fulfillment. This is definitely not a case where in the madness of despair lies the sanity of hope! Familial obligations, caste, perpetuation of the us & them, envy, lust, lack of a personal space, economic hardship - they all weigh heavy in this slim volume. Don't read it in one go, you might not be able to take it --By Vijay Sood on 7 June 2016

Fantastically written !!! Really would like to read in the original language for the real feel... Really wonderful job by translator who has not brought down the pace or thrill in the climax --By Bala - Amz on 2 September 2016
