Barry Commoner was born in Brooklyn in 1917. He graduated from Columbia and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in biology from Harvard. He was University Professor of Environmental Science at Washington University in St. Louis and Director of its Center for the Biology of Natural Systems. He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Scientists' Institute for Public Information, and a founder of the St. Louis Committee for Environmental Information. His books include The Closing Circle, Science and Survival, and Making Peace with the Planet. He died in 2012.
