Synopsis

In the high mountain valleys of Nepal tiny rural communities continue to eke out a living against a landscape at once harsh and magnificent. Ancient traditions endure, changing little from generation to generation. For these people the valley in which they live defines the extent of their known world. The author lived for two years in such a village. During that time she witnessed at first hand the villagers' way of life, learning from them how to tend sheep and cattle, plant and harvest rice, gather pine needles, find the first strawberries. As an anthropologist, she viewed her companions with as few preconceptions as possible. "Against a Peacock Sky" is the story of her friendships and adventures.

Présentation de l'éditeur

For two years Monica Connell lived as a paying guest of Kalchu and Chola in the Nepalese Himalayan village of Talphi, ten days walk from the nearest road. This book poetically captures the immediacy of Connell's experience, and her empathy and sense of wonder at the dramas of village life - a boar hunt in winter, the wedding of a young neighbour and the magic of the full-moon festival when the gods descend to dance amongst the villagers.

Revue de presse

Reading Connell's crystalline prose - sharp, light, sensual and correct - one wonders why can't everyone write this well? - --Michael Taylor, Far Eastern Economic Review
