Synopsis
This book traces the evolution of ideas and images of the goddess in the West from prehistoric times, through Crete, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and the Middle East to her manifestation in Judaism (Eve etc), Christianity (Mary) and agnosticism (Sophia). The perspective is historical with Jungian overtones. Images are interpreted, not merely presented, and it is argued that the goddess needs to play a more valued role today.

A comprehensive, scholarly accessible study, in which the authors draw upon poetry and mythology, art and literature, archaeology and psychology to show how the myth of the goddess has been lost from our formal Judeo-Christian images of the divine. They explain what happened to the goddess, when, and how she was excluded from western culture, and the implications of this loss.

Drawing on art, mythology, poetry, literature, archaeology and psychology, Jules Cashford and Anne Baring examine how the Goddess became excluded from formal Judaeo-Christian images of the divine, and consider when and how this happened and what its consequences have been. The authors describe the separation of God from an originally androgynous Goddess, and the eventual emergence of God as the sole creator of the world. They argue that the Goddess did not disappear entirely: the image of the universe as an organic, living and sacred whole persisted, though it was devalued and driven underground. The book also explores an imbalance between masculine and feminine images in the psyche, using patterns in myth, legend and history to argue for bringing these images into harmony. (MP).
