The book moves through episodes of family and town life: Grace's debutante dress, disasters in the kitchen, dealings with the O'Keefe family, and the fanciful stories of their cousin Isobel. There are also snobbish relatives and small-town gossip, all set in an era of film stars and red lipstick.
