An account of gay and lesbian art from the classical Greeks to the present day, PICTURES AND PASSIONS not only deals fully with actual works about gay themes by identifiably gay artists or for gay patrons, but also devotes attention to criticism, art history and art theory from Plato to Camille Paglia. James Saslow's broad survey ranges from what can be known about prehistory and early societies to the twentieth century, the birth of modern gay studies, the impact of AIDS and the increasing openness of mainstream gay artists like Hockney and Mapplethorpe.
