A delicate, powerful novel about an extraordinary woman, Catherine O'Hara, who has fled Ireland and her drunken, abusive father to arrive in Glasgow in the early 1960s. Terrorised by the the anger and violence she fears she has inherited, she sends away her only son and takes up with an artist, Peter. But Peter becomes obsessed with possessing her visually in the same way her father possessed her physicially. It is for Catherine to ensure the men who love her do not distort her, and that they do not destroy the one relationship that really matters to her - with her son. 'Charged, supple, vivid ... Benzie treats language as a privilege, something continually renewable and surprising' - Adam Thorpe
