Synopsis
Upon his death on October 6, 1959, Bernard Berenson left to Nicky Mariano the vast collection of correspondence which he had accumulated during the nearly sixty years of his residence at Villa I Tatti. On the centennial of Berenson’s birth, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, now established at I Tatti, arranged to publish this inventory of the correspondence in order to make available to interested scholars a knowledge of its contents. The inventory is divided into two parts: all correspondents are listed, with cross references, in Part One; letters written by Bernard or Mary Berenson, or by Nicky Mariano, are listed in Part Two by recipient.

And I would tease him about his habit of keeping every scrap of paper, even bread and butter letters. After his death and before the arrival of the first Director of the new Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, when B.B.'s rooms had to be cleared out, I did not have the heart to throw away what he had respected. respected. Besides, I felt that perhaps even the unim portant letters might help to create for future scholars an image of what I used to call B.B.'s spiderweb with its threads spun out in every direction. My faithful and efficient assistant, Fiorella Superbi Gioffredi, accordingly filed all the letters chronologically and stored them in a room which, already in 1954 when a new wing was added to the library, had been set aside and lined with cupboards for housing the whole collection of Berensoniana: B.B's and Mary's published.
