The luminous literary response that burst forth in the 1920s and 1930s is analyzed in discerning studies of the foreign impact on specific writers like Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Yu Dafu, and Ding Ling, and on the relationship of May Fourth culture to the communist literature that followed.
