Vethake's Principles, one of the earliest systematic American economic treatises first published in 1838, was the closest of the period to the views of the English Ricardian school--"a good illustration of the transfer of classical economic inhibitions to the new continent.Vethake however attempted several innovations, notably broadening his concept of wealth to include services and that of capital to include intellectual products, and came close to approving the absorption of economic rent in taxes. His work also includes extensive sections on international trade and money and banking.Includes an essay 'Henry Vethake - Jacksonian Ricardian' by Joseph Dorfman and Rexford G. Tugwell.
