Although little is known about the early life of Miguel de Cervantes, his adult escapades painted realistic scenes for his writings. The son of a poor surgeon, Cervantes had spent time as a soldier, prisoner of war and even a tax collector for the Spanish Armada~a role in which he was jailed for irregular accounting practices. Considered to be one of the greatest literary figures not only in Spain but the world as well, Cervantes is best known for his narrative humor and satire. His literary works illustrate his vast insight into human nature and imaginative hopefulness, reflecting also his suspicions regarding foreigners and his adulation of military heroes.
