Beginning with a description of the upbringing of a typical Arab child, or rather Arab boy and girl ~ there is no word for child in Arabic~ Raphael Patai goes on to a wide~ranging study of the entire Arab mentality. He describes the intense concern with family loyalty, honor, courage, and hospitality that all Arabs derive from the Bedouins, and analyzes the effect that the Arabic language has had on the way Arabs behave. (Like their language, they are inexact about time and tend to state things in extreme terms.) Patai explains the factors underlying the Arabs' tendency toward extremes of behavior as well as their tendency to substitute words for deeds. He devotes separate chapters to religion, sex, and nationalism, to the Arab response to Westernization and modernization, and to the relation between Arab art and the rest of Arab culture. What emerges is a lucid and fully~rounded portrait of one of the world's great cultures which has traditionally been underestimated and misunderstood by the West. N° de réf. du vendeur 2141401
