This second volume deals specifically with Galatians, Philippians, I and II Thessalonians, and Romans 16: 17~20. After concluding from his exarnination of the Galatian letter that Paul's opponents were not Judaizers but Jewish Christian Gnostics, Dr. Schmithals challenges the unity of Paul's letter to the Philippians. His analysis indicates that an unknown editor put together three letters of Paul's to Philippi to make this one. Dr. Schmithals reconstructs the sequence of events which gave rise to the three letters, and from the third, he identifies the heretical agitators as Jewish Christian Gnostics. The author continues this type of meticulous literary~critical analysis in all the Pauline epistles. He reviews his findings in the final chapter and states his conclusions clearly. He asserts that all these letters were written within a two year span and that all were used against the spreading Gnostic heresy, not against a variety of adversaries as is generally believed. Dr. Schmithals' views run counter to the contemporary mainstream of thought and opinion regarding the Gnostic influence in early Christianity; they are both distinctive and provocative. If his conclusions are even partially correct ~and his work is gaining increased attention~there will have to be some significant shifts made in the interpretation of early Christian history as well as in the interpretation of the entire Pauline corpus. CONTENTS =I. The Heretics in Galatia. / II. The False Teachers of the Epistle to the Philippians. / III. The Historical Situation of the Thessalonian Epistles / IV. The False Teachers of Romans 16:17~20 / V. On the Composition and Earliest Collection of the Major Epistles of Paul. N° de réf. du vendeur 3011605
