Compiled by Helen Plotz and illustrated with original wood engravings by the distinguished British-American artist Clare Leighton. The anthology includes poems by writers ranging from Lucretius, Shakespeare, Blake, Shelley, and Whitman to modern poets responding to scientific discoveries and the technological age. Illustrated throughout with Leighton's characteristic wood engravings. Approximately 200 pages. Detailed Condition: Very Good hardcover in a Good dust jacket. Blue-and-white illustrated jacket shows rubbing, light soiling, edge and corner wear, and small chips or short tears at the spine ends. Gold decorative bands remain present on the front panel and spine. Boards and binding appear sound. Interior shows mild age toning but appears clean and complete. A narrow colored marker or ribbon is visible at the upper page edge. No ownership inscription or annotation observed in the supplied photographs. Significance / Collector Appeal: A distinctive intersection of literature, scientific history, and book illustration. Clare Leighton was an important 20th-century wood engraver whose book illustrations are actively collected. The combination of science-themed poetry, mathematics, and Leighton's engravings makes this considerably more interesting than an ordinary mid-century anthology.
