In this book she considers how its members relate to each other and to outsiders, and places these relationships in the context of American society as a whole. During her period of observation, the author set out to learn how the league's members created their identity within a multi~ethnic environment and which ideological forms underlay their cultural interpretation of the Jew and the "Other." She probed not only their beliefs about political and other activities, but their fundamental assumptions about reality. Her compelling analysis of the cultural symbols by which they define their situation shows that situation to be inherently unstable. ~"Janet Dolgin has written a very fine book. Here is a major contribution to the processes of the creation of history by the analysis of the present itself~a contribution to the understanding of social and cultural action as a meaningful, symbolically conceptualized whole." ~David M.
