We’ve Been Sleeping Long Enough, Part 1: Poetically Alarming the Black Conscience is a poetry book written to speak to multiple issues that have some type of effect on the Black community, and not necessarily in a positive light: lack of an Afrocentric education; the devaluation of the Black woman; gang life; Government conspiracies against people of color; excessive force; the lasting effects of the Willie Lynch letter; health; spirituality; and community empowerment. Some people may feel that we regurgitate the same predicaments without having solutions to those problems. But to their point, the repetition of the issues that plague us is the alarm that is needed to not only cause a rise in our consciousness, but to spark the brain and drive of those of us who will begin the freedom and liberation of the community.
