Merimee says, "I arrived in New Mexico from Portland, Oregon, May 1, 1970. First contact with the ground was a grocery store parking lot where we all were making bologna and green chile sandwiches. Nothing ever tasted so good, white Wonder bread and all. My bare leg and foot sunned while the other remained in the car. I was following directions to stay with the stuff. My car mates also were escapees from the Pacific NW: two Viet Nam vets, a girlfriend of theirs, their pot connection, me, and two dogs. I was looking for my friends who had settled in El Rito the previous year. That was forty-three years ago now, more than half a life-time." I’ve raised a large family, taught thousands of students, and written pretty steadily since 1964, first in years of journals sadly long gone, and now in poems and stories. The wonderful writers' community in Albuquerque holds me here as much as my family and grand-kids do. Notes on Serenity is a living collection of writings about addiction in my family, and in our country."

The author explores writing as therapy, making art out of grief and obsessive tendencies. During the years spent shaping Notes on Serenity, she also attended 12-step programs and professional lectures on addiction illness. Her writing is informed not only by journalists and medical caregivers, but also by the works other parents have produced in order to share, to give hope, and to fight the silence and shame of addiction illness. She feels her book on addiction is important; her compassionate voice speaks up and out for addicts and their loved ones.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Notes on Serenity: An ABC of Addiction is a collection of poems and some prose, loosely linked by addiction and guided by the alphabet like a trellis for a climbing rose. When I first started with my Addict's Mom stories (not yet related to the group), I knew I'd need a form to help me navigate the six-year project. Going backwards isn't highly recommended in the healing community, but for an older poet, reflecting is the source of story and image. When the task of getting enough pieces for a book became overwhelming, I'd take breaks. Long ones. But I couldn't quit. The ABCdarien form helped guide me along.I couldn't bury or burn the manuscript without putting it out there to break the silence. I gave my son veto power over any part, word, phrase, or the whole book. He took the loving path and even allowed me to add his own words at the end. Notes on Serenity is a collection of narrative poems and flash prose about addiction illness, The author is informed by 12-step programs, journalists, medical caregivers, and by the works other parents produced in order to share, to give hope, and to fight the silence and shame. Her son wrote the inspiring epilogue. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
