Following the concept of a mixtape, this book is broken into two sections, SIDE A and SIDE B. In SIDE A, she writes about being home in North Carolina facing her new reality as a mother while trying to hold on to her artistic nature. SIDE B is a collection of writings devoted to issues that are prominent to her as a lover of pop culture and blackness. Each chapter is accompanied with suggested reading, listening and/or viewing list to make her audience think and relate to her as an individual and as an artist. Many of her friends call her KING CARLA but what's a king without a crown? Inside this portrait is slice of what KING CARLA is all about.
