Synopsis

Teaching your preschooler about colors is easy. You just point out the colors of things you are saying, like “Do you want to wear this RED sweater or that BLUE sweater?” Or, “Will you please clean up those YELLOW and GREEN blocks?” But teaching a child about being kind to others is not so easy. Brothers, sisters or friends can be mean to each other. Learning to get along with others is part of good social skills, which children need to do well in school and in life. This book is a part of our First Teachers @ Home Curriculum. Our program gives families the tools to teach children important skills that they need to succeed in Kindergarten and beyond. You can find out more about First Teachers @ Home on our website: www.first-teachers.org. One of the first lessons in our classes is about reading with your child. Reading should go beyond simply saying the words on a page – it should make a connection between the words and colors, shapes and especially emotional content or feelings. “Does that little boy look happy or sad? How do we know he is happy? Show me a happy face!” These are things you can teach your child when you read with them. Remember parents are the first and most important teachers in children’s lives, and their most important school is called “home.”
