Synopsis

In this second collection of stories for adult literacy students, Glenn G. Coats uses a small dairy farm as the backdrop for his tales. Charlie lives on the farm with Grandma and Grandpa. Each new season brings surprises and something new for Charlie to discover. There are bluebirds who tap on the kitchen window to announce their arrival in the spring. Through the slow days of summer, Charlie watches his sandbox change into a field of corn. Autumn brings apples that need to be picked. Charlie waits through a mild winter for a pond to freeze and a chance to try out his new skates. Through it all, Charlie’s grandparents are there beside him, sharing the wonders through his eyes. “One Small Field of Corn” is designed for Tri-County Life Learners which is located in central Virginia and serves the counties of Prince Edward, Buckingham, and Cumberland. The book is intended for adult literacy students to read aloud to both children and grandchildren. It provides opportunities to use basic vocabulary words as well as chances to rehearse dialogue with both phrasing and expression. The stories can also be read aloud and enjoyed by fluent readers of all ages, especially those readers that have progressed from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”
