Synopsis

The Hilbert Collection features oil, gouache, and watercolor paintings by artists working in the Golden State from just prior to the Great Depression until the 1980s. The essence of the collection is the "California Scene" - a style of representational painting that depicts ordinary people engaged in the ordinary activities of life in the cities and farms of mid-twentieth-century California. Seemingly spontaneous and yet carefully observed, these lyrical scenes reflect the artists' great fondness for people and deep respect for the way in which they led their lives. Windows in Time offers an extraordinary glimpse at some of the finest works in the Hilbert Collection, accompanied by artist biographies and essays that set these works into context.
