Pat Stokes is a psychologist who teaches and does research at Barnard College, Columbia University. Her expertise in creativity is hands-on: prior to becoming a psychol0gist, she studied painting and graphics at Pratt, wrote advertising copy at J. Walter Thompson (in New York and Tokyo), and was a creative group head at Ted Bates & Co. Her approach is that of a practitioner, applying a constraint-based strategy (acquired in art school and advertising) to analyzing past, and facilitating future, creations/innovations (in the arts, education, and business). Her most recent innovation is a radically simplified math curriculum called Only the NUMBERS count. The curriculum uses an explicit base-10 count (11 is called ten-one) and a count-and-combine chart with movable parts (designed by the author) to teach single- and double-digit addition and subtraction in kindergarten and first grade, and a multi-operation chart (also created by the author) to teach multiplication, division, and fractions simultaneously in 2nd and 3rd grades. The curriculum was designed using the constraint pair model introduced in her first book (Creativity from Constraints: The Psychology of Breakthrough) and further developed in this.
