Synopsis

Why do some people exhibit despicable and greedy behaviors while others are compassionate and tolerant? Nurturing of course plays a significant role in one’s behavior but less acknowledged is that all human behaviors originate as a function of brain activity. Individual variability in the neurological signaling pathways of the brain can account for a variety of human behaviors. Fear, aggression, empathy, prejudice, morality, creativity and our tribal nature are ancient genetic survival traits that ensured that modern humans are the last Hominin standing. Politics, religion, the sciences and the humanities are human constructs that are influenced by human behavior. The unembellished explanation is that modern humans were and remain tribal animals with the behavioral genetic traits that originated with our ancient ancestors. The Nature of Humans - Why We Behave As We Do is a biological and philosophical exploration of the nature of humans exploiting the scholarship of paleo-anthropology, history and the neurosciences. Our nature is summarized by Parrhesiastes, a hypothetical alien entity, offering an unbiased and thought-provoking assessment on the nature of humans. This well researched book with simplified science, personal anecdotes, wit and a Progressive’s perspective is intended for the lay reader. Reviews The Nature of Humans - Why We Behave As We Do "This is a well-written, informative and engaging discussion on human behavior and tis consequences. The inclusion of personal stories and the biographical material of great thinkers add a bit of humor and interest, creating a very engaging and enjoyable book.. It is well suited for the general lay reader." Dr. Roger Guillemin Nobel Laureate, The Salk Institute "Newby covers the evolutionary history of humans with insight into the genetic traits that lead to an assortment of behaviors, both good and bad. There is a large section devoted to Climate Change with compelling arguments for action. The assessment is done by an alien, Parrhesiastes, who renders un-biased judgment on the successes and failures of humans. The science is simplified, making this book easy to read." Jason Rogalski, Artist and Science Teacher "Newby is a ‘parrhesiastes’ who views human history and especially American society with a clear, unflinching vision, and is therefore compelled to express his concern and compassion. Despite the seriousness of the topic, however, the book is written in a highly readable and personal style that makes it a pleasure to read." Dr. John Chalmers, UCSD
