Synopsis

A young man, Joshua Kincaid, wanders aimlessly in Mexico when his dream of becoming a Santa Fe trader is shattered. His sense of duty calls upon him to save a friend, a Crypto-Jew (Secret Jew), from the Mexican Inquisition. When he tries to rebuild his trading venture Kincaid faces threats from corrupt Mexican officials, Anglo financers, competitors, and forces of nature. Throughout the story religions clash: Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, native religions, and the outlawed Catholic sect Penitentes.
