President George Bush issued a 15 January 1991 deadline to Saddam Hussein to leave Kuwait or face attack by a multi-national force. Saddam Hussein refused to leave and OPERATION DESSERT SHIELD became OPERATION DESSERT STORM with the bombing of military targets in Kuwait and Iraq. Over the next several weeks, coalition forces continued the air war, intensifying pressure on Iraq. On 24 February the ground war to liberate Kuwait commenced. In just over 100 hours , Iraqi forces were defeated and Saddam Hussein agreed to a ceasefire. During the coalition air campaign, the damage to Iraq airfields, air defenses, electrical power, biological and chemical weapons caches, headquarters, intelligence assets, communications and the Iraqi army was devastating. During the 43 day air war over 100,000 sorties were flown averaging over 2,500 sorties per day. The air campaign and associated ground war proved to the world how modern technology in the hands of the world's finest leaders could dominate on the battlefield. This book is an Oral History of the leaders of the air campaign of OPERATION DESSERT SHIELD AND OPERATION DESSERT STORM.
