Green Beans and Legacies-New Edition, is a revised and updated version of the original Green Beans and Legacies, published in 2007. The New Edition is the first in a series of books comprising the Raising Successful Children Series. The Series draws from much that the author has learned during a varied career as educator, counselor, therapist, lecturer and consultant. It is likely, however, that most insights and observations were gained from raising with his wife, Mary Jo, three children who are now adults and married, enabling the author and his wife to enjoy and brag about 10 grandchildren. Green Beans and Legacies is comprised of a variety of reflections on raising successful children. They are derived from numerous columns that he wrote during a ten year period when he did seminar work and consulting with many schools and organizations across the country. The columns were written in response to many requests the author received to share his ideas with parents about successfully raise their children. Most of the reflections in Green Beans are “the best of” these columns. The author observes that raising children, like any important task, needs to be done with the end in mind. For the author, that end is a child who becomes a successful adult who is independent, moral and purposeful. The longest reflection is also the first in which the author observes that two significant transitions take place when parents raise successful children. First, the children mature from being dependent infants to becoming independent, moral and purposeful adults. Second, parents move from being nurturers and teachers of their young children within a context of authority to being friends and coaches to their adult children. The fulcrum, the author notes, upon which these successful transitions hinge is how parents utilize their parental authority. Eight Basics for effectively utilizing parental authority are delineated and reviewed. The Basics can easily be used as a self-assessment by any parent in evaluating how they are utilizing their parental authority. A few highlights from Green Beans include:•It takes a parent to raise a child, not a village•Helicopter and Snowplow parents are put under the microscope•Lessons learned from an elderly, African American woman raised in rural, pre-Civil Rights south who hated picking green beans. She still managed to raise, with her husband, two Ivy League educated children, one a doctor and the other a lawyer.•The importance of teaching children to be grateful as demonstrated by a wonderful Lost Boy from the Sudan•The author brags about his Little League Dodgers and their record of 19 wins and 0 losses.•The note received by the author after his father’s death that helped him better understand Presence as a key aspect of raising successful children.•A plaque that was viewed by all prisoners upon first arriving at Alcatraz that provides brilliant parenting advice.•Parental credibility allows you to teach, influence and guide your child. It is earned. •You will meet a gentleman whose license place was IAMAGIMP. He knew more about leaving a legacy that inspires and instructs than anyone the author knows.Projected titles of the remaining books in the Raising Successful Children Series are:•Becoming Your Child’s Most Important Teacher•Raising a Goal Oriented and Purposeful Child
