Melissa’s marriage to Thomas brought her into his family – a group of people unlike any she’d ever known. At the center was her new mother-in-law Shirley, who was apt to choose a first-aid manual as bedtime reading for the kids, or teach them how to open childproof caps. At first, Melissa thought Shirley might be crazy – then she realized that Shirley just had a unique way of doing everything. Over the course of twenty-five years, Melissa learned about Shirley’s upbringing in a Depression- era orphanage, and became as fascinated by Shirley’s history as she was her unvarnished and original take on the world. Crazy is Relative is a rich memoir that explores how we’re shaped by our histories, and how a mother and wife devoted to the same man became family to one another. From Parker J. Palmer (author of Let Your Life Speak, A Hidden Wholeness, and Healing the Heart of Democracy): "What do you get when you cross Oliver Twist with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest with The Odd Couple with The Book of Ruth? You get this amazing memoir by Melissa Keller—who knows what it means to love even when it’s not easy to love, and knows how to write about it surpassingly well. Within a few pages, I wanted more. When I came to a section titled “Thy Crazy-ass People Shall Be My Crazy-ass People,” I was hooked. Here’s a bone-deep exploration of love, not the Valentine’s version, but gritty, grounded love. It’s set in the context of a surreal family story, but so much is surreal these days. At a time when many of us feel surrounded by “crazy” 24/7, it’s hard to remember that love can see us through. Melissa Keller is one of those rare guides who can help us get to the other side with our hearts intact."

Melissa Keller is a professor at the Indiana University School of Education. She and her husband Thomas Kuhn live in their home surrounded by the beautiful woods of Bloomington, Indiana with their cat and a small pack of unruly dogs. Their favorite pastime is sitting on their screened-in porch and watching the dance of territorial hummingbirds around the birdfeeders, a far and welcome cry from the days when they endured the drama of their children fighting over the bathroom. They have recently welcomed their first grandchild Lyla Rose into the world, and have no plans to teach her how to open childproof caps, ever.

Paperback. Etat : Good. One of Smithsonian Magazine's Favorite Books of 2022 With wildlife thriving in cities, we have the opportunity to create vibrant urban ecosystems that serve both people and animals. The Accidental Ecosystem tells the story of how cities across the United States went from having little wildlife to filling, dramatically and unexpectedly, with wild creatures. Today, many of these cities have more large and charismatic wild animals living in them than at any time in at least the past 150 years. Why have so many cities--the most artificial and human-dominated of all Earth's ecosystems--grown rich with wildlife, even as wildlife has declined in most of the rest of the world? And what does this paradox mean for people, wildlife, and nature on our increasingly urban planet? The Accidental Ecosystem is the first book to explain this phenomenon from a deep historical perspective, and its focus includes a broad range of species and cities. Cities covered include New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Austin, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Digging into the natural history of cities and unpacking our conception of what it means to be wild, this book provides fascinating context for why animals are thriving more in cities than outside of them. Author Peter S. Alagona argues that the proliferation of animals in cities is largely the unintended result of human decisions that were made for reasons having little to do with the wild creatures themselves. Considering what it means to live in diverse, multispecies communities and exploring how human and non-human members of communities might thrive together, Alagona goes beyond the tension between those who embrace the surge in urban wildlife and those who think of animals as invasive or as public safety hazards. The Accidental Ecosystem calls on readers to reimagine interspecies coexistence in shared habitats, as well as policies that are based on just, humane, and sustainable approaches.
