“I took a bite of the cookie and smiled. It wasn’t even noon and already this frigid, freaky Friday had been full of sweet surprises—which could only mean that even when Mercury is in retrograde, it really is my world,” Lisa Hickman writes in Ordinary Magic. In this debut collection of vignettes, Hickman shares over forty of her humorous New York City adventures, celebrating an appreciation for finding beauty in unlikely places— or magic on ordinary days, if you will. As we follow Hickman through the busy streets of the Big Apple, we revel in the lessons she learns from unlikely teachers— making us believe that perhaps there really are no strangers after all. The faces in Ordinary Magic could be found anywhere: that’s the old man with the weird sideburns in your town and hey, that’s the pink-haired teenager who works at your grocery store! And isn’t it mysterious how quickly a moment can turn from bad to good with the grace of a relatable one-liner or the familiar sound of a sudden belly laugh? The perfect read with your morning coffee or the little book you page through before you dream at night, Ordinary Magic is an uplift, a reminder that perhaps happiness is not such an impossible feat.
