In 1866, when embattled soldier, Nathaniel Keegan, returns home to Texas after years of fighting for the Confederate cause in the name of protecting his family, he is forced to confront not only the deaths of his wife and child, but also a hostile brother and vengeful mercenaries. His homecoming and a violent confrontation brings to light a horrific incident in his family's past and the part he plays in the tragedy. His older brother, James, believes one man, a Cheyenne Indian, holds the key to it all and is ready to kill for the answers he needs. Complex and emotionally charged feelings are stirred and again Nathaniel plays a part for which he has no control. A final deadly occurrence pushes James on a path he has long anticipated, certain the answers are far more important than the devastating consequences they may hold. Resolute, Nathaniel safeguards his family and brother while coping with his own wavering mental state, gathering strength from his first and abiding love and one newly found. Written in multiple narratives, the characters' stories interweave, each a gripping portrait of the complexities and frailties of human nature, moving many toward a powerful reckoning. At its core, the novel is a story of family and resilience, repentance and redemption, but above all, it is a story of abiding love. The novel has a strong female voice with hardy women who continue to fight and survive against the violence of men. It is a novel with authentic and flawed characters who speak with irrefutable truth, dealing with rape, PTSD, known as Soldier’s Heart in Post-Civil War era, and repressed memories caused by traumatic injury.
