"Johnson succeeds so well as to make one eager for more" (John Sutherland London Review of Books)
"A beautifully tragic chronicle" (New York Magazine)
"Denis Johnson is one of our most inventive, unpredictable novelists" (New York Times Book Review)
"Johnson knows his people inside out, their lost, lonely, never-had-a-chance lives. He knows how they talk and think, and he makes us know them too" (Publishers Weekly)
"One of the strongest examples of fiction noir since Robert Stone's first work appeared-with an absence of sentimentality and an overall shape that's perfectly judged, this is one of the most impressive first novels of recent seasons - full of a fiery recoiling kick, the dreadful power of inhuman ugliness and misfortune beyond redemption" (Kirkus Reviews)
The most critically acclaimed, and first, of Denis Johnson's novels, Angels puts Jamie Mays -- a runaway wife toting along two kids -- and Bill Houston -- ex-Navy man, ex-husband, ex-con -- on a Greyhound Bus for a dark, wild ride cross country. Driven by restless souls, bad booze, and desperate needs, Jamie and Bill bounce from bus stations to cheap hotels as they ply the strange, fascinating, and dangerous fringe of American life. Their tickets may say Phoenix, but their inescapable destination is a last stop marked by stunning violence and mind-shattering surprise.
Denis Johnson, known for his portraits of America's dispossessed, sets off literary pyrotechnics on this highway odyssey, lighting the trek with wit and a personal metaphysics that defiantly takes on the world.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Near Very Good. First UK Edition. Originally published in the States in the previous year. 8vo. Blue paper-covered boards. [x], 210pp. Johnson's first novel, which David Foster Wallace considered to be direly underappreciated. It is a tragic odyssey through the dark flipside of America: '"Angels" is the story of two born losers. Jamie is escaping with her two baby girls from a husband who has gone zombie-like on her. Bill is dreaming of making it big in a life of crime so natural to him that any other way would make no sense. They meet on a Greyhound bus, and team up because they have nowhere else to go.' The cover illustration is by Donald Macpherson. Lightly spotted to the head edge, where the upper board is bumped, the corners and less so the spine with small bumps and marks or scuffs, a prelim and the rear endpaper/pastedown with areas of toning, in the jacket, echoing any bumps and slightly rubbed in general, the lower panel with a nick/crease at its tail, a little spotted to the lower flap, and with soiling around the spine, where the yellow is perhaps a touch faded. Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
