Peu de temps avant l'invasion japonaise, la famille van Hoorn organise sa célèbre fête Sinterklaas dans leur plantation de thé. L'un de leurs invités, Mattijs, un pilote néerlandais, espère forger un avenir dans les Indes néerlandaises, peut-être avec la fille de la famille, Anna, mais elle est déchirée entre ses rêves de Hollande et son désir d'appartenance.
