The author, James Kyle DFM, joined the RAF soon after the Battle of Britain and after flying training in Texas, became a member of 197 Typhoon Fighter Squadron at Drem, East Lothian upon its formation in December 1942. He was one of the few who lived to complete a full tour of operations and was finally demobilised in 1947 as a flight commander with 80 Tempest Fighter Squadron in Germany. James Kyle not only describes vividly what life is like as one of the famous "Brylcreem Boys" scrambling strafing and dive-bombing in his redoubtable Hawker Typhoon, he also comments on his childhood in industrial Clydeside and on the challenge of life after the war.
