Etat : Sehr gut. X; 261 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Little abrasion on the cover. Overall good and clean. - Leichter Abrieb auf Einband, sonst gut und sauber. - Renewed interest in the history of sixteenth-century Scotland stems largely from the pioneering scholarship of Professor Gordon Donaldson, in whose honour this volume has been compiled by his former students, colleagues and friends. The book includes appreciations of his impact as a teacher and research scholar, and mirrors his wide range of interests in the Renaissance and Reformation era. Contributions of an administrative and legal nature provide new insight into such diverse topics as the developing status and function of notaries, financing the king's household in the early sixteenth century and the royal administration of James VI, under whom it was still possible for a Catholic to hold high office. The history of the church, both Pre- and Post-Reformation, is represented by studies on patronage, while another side of the church's activities is analysed in a study of witchcraft, seen here as the darker vision of the Scottish Renaissance. The literary and cultural implications oi that movement have inspired two contributions, one looking towards Italy and the other to varied riches in the library of a Scottish bishop. Other changes in society are reflected in an examination of the social status of Edinburgh merchants and a fresh look at the evidence for increasing literacy in the Highlands. Shetland also merits a chapter, and new light shed on the Earl of Rothes' stay in Denmark illustrates Scandinavian influence. The essays possess an underlying unity and, taken together, make a notable contribution to the proper understanding of the history of sixteenth-century Scotland.
