These problems can be posed as a series of questions. To what extent was Gwynedd's economic weakness responsible for the loss of Welsh independence in 1282-3 ? Can a firm link be established between the imposition of the subsidy (or tax) of 1292-3 and the Welsh revolt of 1294-5? Is it possible to form a rough estimate of the population of Wales at the conquest of 1282-3 - or after the Black Death or the Glyn Dwr revolt? Can we measure the comparative wealth of various parts of Wales in the middle ages? What does the subsidy roll tell us about the nature of Welsh society or about its economy? To all these questions some very tentative answers are given. They are offered in the hope that they will stimulate discussion and further research.
