Over the past three decades, Immanuel Kant's classic Perpetual Peace (Zum Ewigen Frieden) has become a source of inspiration for several International Relations scholars in their attempt to theorize liberal internationalism and modern cosmopolitanism. Inescapably, the burgeoning global governance literature in the last decade, too, has benefited from Kant s ideas. However, it is important to situate Kant s essay in its wider intellectual environment. This volume is the first and only contemporary compilation of classic perpetual peace proposals of the 18th century. The selected texts here help us trace the roots of the contemporary notions of global governance to the Age of Enlightenment. An especially important contribution of the book is the reproduction of the full texts of Rousseau's, Bentham's and Kant's perpetual peace proposals next to each other and against the backdrop of other representative 18th-century proposals. This juxtaposition not only enables the reader to assess the intellectual differences, similarities and crossovers between the most notable projects of perpetual peace, but also paves the way for a more nuanced historical grounding of the idea of global governance.
