Synopsis
It is the first quarter of the 18th century. As international trade expands, increasing numbers of merchant vessels, deeply laden with rich cargoes, are plying the sea lanes. Light-fingered seafarers are quick to take the opportunity of getting rich beyond their wildest dreams by seizing the booty so ready to hand in the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean and the Spanish Main. So piracy grows apace while the navies of Britain, France, Spain and Holland are busy fighting each other instead of protecting their merchant shipping. The "Freebooter's Golden Age" has dawned.
In The Pirates of Shearwater Island, Amyas Gamperdown, a King's Officer, in a narrative that has the tang of the salt sea, tells how he found himself as a youth helping to track down and destroy one of the most feared of the pirate fleets.
