"Working with Gun Dogs" is written by a real countryman who has worked with dogs and studied their behaviour and temperament since he was 7 years old. "Working with Gun Dogs" first explores the basic and most important issue of choosing the right dog. This accomplished, there is then the question of management of the dog. Though we are a nation of dog lovers, many animals are overfed, prone to bad habits and insufficiently exercised. Consequently, correct training is particularly important and each dog's unique temperament needs to be taken into account during the process. Then, once in the field, the working dog's life is examined in detail. There are dogs working on grouse moors, dogs flushing and 'walking up' pheasants, finding and retrieving game, following wounded game, etc. Other subjects covered include the physiology of the dog, encouraging the dog into water, the correct diet and the identification of ailments and injuries. Here, indeed, is the indispensable manual for every sportsman who works with dogs in the field.
