Synopsis

The body of a woman is found hanging from the branch of an olive in Sicily, another is strangled in her apartment in Rome. One was the wife and the other the mistress of Sicilian deputies. It would be easy to assume that these were the outward signs of yet another vendetta were it not for the fact that a communist news sheet appeared on the streets of Rome complete with photograph, before the first of the two bodies was discovered.
The evidence of collusion seems too obvious to ignore. But the owners of a profitable left-wing venture do not have to be Communists themselves. Captain Soldano of the Carabinieri goes down to Sicily in an attempt to trace the publishers and he is far too experienced to be misled, either by the too obvious or by well-meaning advice from others with their own fish to fry.
