Hardcover with dust jacket. Etat : Sehr gut. 353 p. Lediglich der Schutzumschlag ist etwas berieben. Sonst aber ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar/ Only the dust jacket is a bit rubbed. But otherwise a good and clean copy/. - Horace Walpole (1717-97), perhaps the greatest of all English letter writers, has many other claims to fame. His copious memoirs record the byzantine politics of the ages of George II and George III. His works of art and garden history, Anecdotes of Painting (1716-80) and the Essay on Modern Gardening (1780) are of seminal importance, as are his pioneering Gothic novel and drama The Castle ofOtrano (1765) and The Mysterious Mother (1768); while his remarkable remodelling of Strawberry Hill had far-reaching effects on neo-Gothic architecture. He has long been admired for his originality and reviled for his frivolity. This volume charts Walpole's critical reception from the earliest reviews in 1757 to the judgments of the early Victorians up to 1840, striking a balance between sympathetic and hostile responses. Attention is paid to criticism in Europe and especially in France, where Walpole has always been highly regarded. Among the authors represented in this selection are Voltaire, Rousseau, Burke, Gibbon, Chatterton, Fanny Burney, Scott, Byron, Coleridge, Hazlitt and Macaulay. Born and educated in England, Peter Sabor has taught in Canada since 1978 at the University of Calgary and at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. He is now Professor of English at Queen's, specializing in Restoration and eighteenth-century literature.CONTENTS: A Letter from Xo Ho, a Chinese Philosopher at London (1757) 1 Unsigned notice, Monthly Review, May 1757 2 Unsigned review, Journal encyclopédique, June 1757 A Catalogue of Royal and Noble Authors (1758) 3 owen ruffhead, unsigned review, Monthly Review, December 1758 4 Unsigned review, Gentleman's Magazine, January 1759 edmund burke, unsigned review, Annual Register for 1758, March 1759 george osborn (?), unsigned pamphlet, Remarks on Mr. Walpole's Catalogue, 1759 henry headley, essay in Fugitive Pieces, 1785 Anecdotes of Painting in England (1762-80) william shenstone, two letters to Thomas Percy and Richard Graves, April (?) and November 1762 william Kenrick, two unsigned reviews, Monthly Review, April 1762 and April 1764 edmund burke, unsigned review, Annual Register for 1762, March 1763 Unsigned review, Critical Review, December 1780 paul-henry maty, unsigned review, New Review, June 1782 Unsigned review, Retrospective Review, 1827 A Catalogue of Engravers (1764) Unsigned review, Critical Review, February 1764 william kenrick, unsigned notice, Monthly Review, April 1764 The Castle of Otranto (1765) walpole's Prefaces to the first and second editions, December 1764 and April 1765 walpole, letter to William Cole, March 1765 (a) GILLY williams, letter to George Selwyn, March 1765 (b) william MASON, letter to Walpole, April 1765 Two unsigned reviews, Critical Review, January and June 1765 john langhorne, two unsigned reviews, Monthly Review, February and May 1765 Friedrich melchior grimm on a French translation, in Historical and Literary Memoirs, 1767 wieliam Warburton, a note in his edition of The Works of Alexander Pope, 1770 clara reeve, Preface to The Old English Baron, 1778 ANN yearsley, 'On Reading The Castle of Otranto', December 1784 eleanor fenn, two papers in 'Mrs. Teachwell's' The Female Guardian, 1784 thomas green, Extracts from the Diary of a Lover of Literature, February 1797 anna Laetitia barbauld, Introduction to The Castle of Otranto, 1810 Walter scott, Introduction to The Castle of Otranto, 1811 john dunlop, The History of Fiction, 1814 william hazlitt, Lectures on the Comic Writers, 1819 A Letter from the King of Prussia to Rousseau (1766) JEAN-JACQUES rousseau, letter to the Editor, St. James's Chronicle, April 1766 Two pseudonymous letters to the Editor, St. James's Chronicle, November-December 1766 grimm on Walpole and Rousseau, 1766 An Account of the Giants Lately Discovered (1766) Unsigned review, Critical Review, August 1766 Unsigned review, Monthly Review, September 1766 Unsigned review.
