'Beau' Carr here paints a lively and entertaining picture of what life was like, both on and off duty, for a young RAF officer between the wars. After a fateful boyhood joyride in an Avro 504, the author's passion to fly led him to an Egyptian airfield for flying training, an enterprise so fraught with pitfalls for the incautious pilot that the station band became expert at rendering the Dead March from Saul. Then followed active service, flying Wapitis over the harsh deserts and perilous mountains of Iraq to subdue rebellious tribesmen - an early, and successful, use of the technique of 'air control'. Also revealed are the shocking details of what exactly Bedouin women did with rusty knives to the unfortunate aircrew who fell into their hands. After that game the relative peace of flying seaplanes on the Solent, although the larger than life characters who inhabited the officers mess made existence there at times a little hazardous. From there to instructing on Tiger Moths, and eventually to the ultimate trial of a pilot's skill and experience - test flying the elegant new aircraft of the 1930s. Throughout, Wing Commander Carr draws on his uniquely varied experience as a pilot to describe what it felt like to fly many different aircraft, from the Avro 504 to the Spitfire Mark 9. His story is also liberally salted with anecdotes, many of them scandalous and a few downright scurrilous. The illustrations, some of which are quite horrifying, are from the author's own collection and provide a priceless pictorial record of the Royal Air Force in those early years. Ref *SS 3.
