Although born and raised about as far from the sea as possible in Wolverhampton, a lifetime interest in ships and shipping was aroused after taking holidays in Southampton in the early '60s; initially taking photographs but then taking a further interest in researching details of the histories of the ships and their owning companies. After moving to the Southampton area after graduating, I became a life-member of World Ship Society and also joined the local Solent Maritime Society.Although career moves necessitated moves around the country, I returned to the South some 15 years ago and eventually became hon.sec. of Solent Maritime Society.I have produced a number of illustrated talks on various aspects of shipping and shipbuilding which I present at various Society meetings.I have had many shipping related articles published in Ships Monthly and contributed photographs for the previous edition of Ocean Ships.
