Laminated illustrated wrappers, small 4to, 64 pp, ills. From the introduction: "Pictures on bookbindings are limited neither to a specific geographical area, nor to a particular period. They are found in the Far East as well as all over Europe and in the United States; they occur as early as the 5th or 6th century and are still produced today. In order to keep this vast subject to reasonable proportions, one large category, that of 19th- and 20th-century publishers' bindings, has been excluded. The bindings described here are . individually designed bindings, made for individual books; and almost all of them were made in Europe. Pictorial bindings - bindings decorated with a representation or a picture - are less common than those decorated with abstract designs, and the reasons for this are both economic and artistic." Contents: Introduction; The British Library's Collections; Leather and vellum; Onlays and inlays; Cut leather; Ink and paint; Wood and straw; Paper; Ivory and metal; Fabric; Binding technique; Suggestions for further reading. Spine faded, front wrapper slightly browned, otherwise Good. N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-69007
