Edward Lhotka began bookbinding in 1924 apprenticed to Alfred de Sauty, one of the British masters of the art. At the age of fourteen, Lhotka was employed at the firm of R.R. Donnelley & Sons of Chicago. During the next forty-eight years he rose from journeyman to assistant manager of the fine binding department of the famous publisher. As a teacher, he taught hundreds the fine art of hand binding after hours at Donnelley's. He reitred in 1972. Today he still binds books with all the skills and craftsmanship taught to him by de Sauty.
