À propos de l'auteur
Philippa Marks is Curator of Western Bookbindings at The British Library. She has written two other books, both published by the British Library: Treasures in Focus: Decorated Papers (2007) and The British Library Guide to Bookbinding (1998).

Written by P. J. M. Marks, Curator of Western Bookbindings at the British Library, the volume combines an accessible history of binding techniques with detailed studies of individual masterpieces, placing them within their artistic, historical, and bibliographical context. The introductory chapters examine the evolution of the codex and its binding structures, early Coptic and Islamic traditions, the emergence of leather binding in medieval Europe, the introduction of gold tooling from the Islamic world, embroidered bindings, the luxury bindings of Renaissance collectors, the rise of commercial binding, and the revival of artistic binding under the Arts and Crafts movement and its successors. The catalogue is arranged chronologically in six chapters (Early Books; Sixteenth Century; Seventeenth Century; Eighteenth Century; Nineteenth Century; Twentieth Century), each entry describing a notable binding with commentary on its structure, decoration, provenance, and historical significance. Among the celebrated owners and patrons represented are Jean Grolier, Thomas Mahieu, Queen Elizabeth I, Samuel Pepys, George III, and William Morris, while binders include the workshops of Samuel Mearne, Antoine-Michel Padeloup, Roger Payne, René Simier, and T. J. Cobden-Sanderson. Illustrated throughout with specially commissioned colour photography showing bindings from multiple viewpoints, the volume concludes with a glossary of technical terms, suggestions for further reading, acknowledgements, and an index.
