Tom Popcock is the leading contemporary authority on Nelson. This biography was runner-up for the Whitbread Biography Prize; he has writtern four other books about Nelson and his circle and has lectured about him at the National Maritime Museum. Belonging to a naval family with roots in Nelson's Norfolk, he has seen the Navy in action as a war correspondent - reporting the end of the Second World War as well as Vietnam and Northern Ireland - during a Fleet Street career of half a century, during which he was also Naval Correspondent of The Times. He is the author of fourteen books, mostly biographies, including those of King William IV, the writer Alan Mooreheada and the Victorian artist Walter Greaves. He lives in London and is married with two daughters.
