Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, xviii, 148 pp, 4 plates. From the blurb: "P.H. Gosse (1810-88) was among the most distinguished natural historians in the nineteenth century. Unlike so many of them, he was a true field naturalist, and all his work, even the popular books by which he earned his living, is pervaded with his own, often new, observations. He was the father of sea-shore studies and of the aquarium, his writings on the sea-anemone and rotifer still being read today. His books on Canada, Alabama and Jamaica are early examples of genuine observation, rather than mere collecting. His illustrations to his own books, especially the coloured ones, are always of high quality and in many cases outstanding. Gosse is also of interest as a member of the Brethren (the Plymouth Brethren), and he published widely on religious topics, often with his first wife Eliza, including studies of evolution and biblical history. Gosse was the subject of a bibliography published some twenty-five years ago, but that book failed to give a satisfactory indication of the scope of his writings. The present study, the result of a collaboration between an expert on Gosse and natural-history writing in general, and a specialist on the Brethren, is an attempt to provide for the first time a complete inventory of all the published writings of Gosse, with full bibliographical descriptions and analysis of various editions, issues and bindings."
