The binding is very tight like a new book and the exterior covers show only minor edge and corner bumps. Pages are clean and crisp with no handwriting or any other markings, nothing torn, no remainder marks etc. The biggest issue on the exterior is a small bump on the rear cover, right corner, along with a few faint marks to the shine that really only can be seen by moving it around under a light. We acquired a large collection of chess books over 40 years ago, most of which were kept packed away until the time of this listing - which is why the condition is so nice. The opening variations after 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Bg5 Be7 are well established, not subject to wild fluctuations and give good possibilities for counter-attacking. In this book the ideas underlying 5 e5 Nfd7 6 Bxe7 (the Classical Variation) and 6 h4 (the Albin-Chatard Attack) are explained carefully and in detail. Special attention is given to the relatively unknown Frankfurt Variation (5 e5 Ng8). The reader is briefed on the intricacies of the Steinitz Variation (4 e5) and given examples of how famous players have created counterplay in the reputedly drawish Exchange Variation (3 ed). In additional two other important lines, the Burn (4 . de) and the Rubinstein (3 . de) have their possibilities and limitations set out. Wolfgang Heidenfeld, a lifelong practitioner of the Classical French, has been champion both of South Africa and of Ireland (six times) where he now lives. His many publications include Grosse Remispartien and his chess autobiography, Lacking the Master Touch. Tim Harding, also a Dubliner by adoption, is a member of the British correspondence chess team and a well-known journalist. His publications include The Batsford Guide to Chess Openings (with Leonard Barden), The Leningrad Dutch and the companion volume French: MacCutcheon and Advance Lines. 160 pages 70 diagrams.
